The case study is set at the beginning of 2025 and raises the question of how to further improve Louis Vuitton's performance while reducing its environmental footprint, with a focus on the company's supply chain.
It begins with a description of the luxury goods industry and introduces the sector's major player, the luxury conglomerate Moët Hennessy-Louis Vuitton (LVMH). It then focuses on Louis Vuitton (LV), LVMH's largest and most profitable subsidiary. The study describes the company's main product lines, its manufacturing and logistics operations, its distribution policy and its marketing strategy.
The study concludes by questioning the viability of Louis Vuitton's business model in terms of growth, profitability and environmental performance.
The appendices list all the brands owned by LVMH, present illustrations of Louis Vuitton's iconic products, provide financial information on the group and data on the environmental impact of possible modes of transport.
The objective of this case study is to encourage students and participants to analyse and discuss the reasons behind Louis Vuitton's exceptional profitability. The company's net operating margin was estimated at around 50% of turnover, double the average for the luxury sector, which is widely considered to be one of the most profitable in the world.
By identifying the nature of Louis Vuitton's competitive advantage, students will discover the key role played by the company's supply chain. They will also be able to assess the impact of strategic supply chain choices, not only on financial performance, but also on sustainability and environmental performance.
The main themes addressed in this case study are: the nature and sources of competitive advantage; the central role played by the supply chain in shaping a company's business model and the extent of its competitive advantage; the impact of a company's strategy and its supply chain on its environmental footprint.
The data provided in the case study allows for a quantitative assessment and measurement of the impact of Louis Vuitton's supply chain on:
- Its competitive advantage
- Its financial performance
- Its environmental footprint
