PureStoves: Selling Beneficial Goods at the Bottom of the Pyramid

PureStoves was started in 2013 as a commercial entity selling efficient cookstoves to replace open fire cooking or traditional charcoal cookstoves. The case tracks the development of the company up until 2018: growth has been slower than forecasted, profitability is still not in sight and the Foundation which initially financed the start-up must reduce its funding. Participants must examine what led the firm to this situation and propose a marketing plan to turn it around.
Objectifs pédagogiques
1)      When used in a general marketing class, Purestove can be used to work on issues of strategy implementation and marketing mix coherence in a very different context: an African start-up wanting to have a social impact on poor consumers. It shows how marketing overarching principles still hold here, if one really focuses on the true customer needs.
2)      When used in a specialized course on inclusive business models, this case is used to challenge traditional marketing strategies to help people living at the Bottom of the Pyramid (BoP). It helps explains why so many social entrepreneurs do not successfully scale up, and provides a way to critically examine philanthropy's role. At a more academic level, this case is a great illustration of the Prahalad vs. Karnani debate on how best to view BOP customers; it suggests that having a ";business" approach when selling beneficial goods might paradoxically have a bigger social impact than an overly "social" approach.
