This case examines the reverse logistics operations of Recommerce Group, a French company specializing in the collection, refurbishment, and resale of used smartphones and other consumer electronics.
Rapid growth in return volumes has strained the firm's decentralized processing network, leading to capacity constraints, longer lead timer, rising costs, and declining recovery value.
Students are provided with detailed operational and financial data to evaluate three strategic alternatives: maintaining decentralized facilities, investing in a centralized automated hub, or outsourcing to a third-party provider, and to calculate costs, margins, and investment feasibility.
The case develops analytical and strategic decision-making skills by requiring learners to recommend the most economically and operationally viable reverse logistics network design.
- Analyze reverse logistics operations quantitatively, including calculating costs, recovery revenues, margins, capacity utilization, and lead-time impacts using operational data
- Evaluate and compare alternative network designs (decentralized, centralized, and outsourcing) by assessing trade-offs in cost efficiency, speed, scalability, control and risk
- Formulate and justify a managerial recommendation that integrates financial analysis with operational and strategic considerations to determine the most viable reverse logistics configuration
